Interior Renovation

A renovation for a NYC/LA Couple: a weekend house on a quiet, tree-line, family street.

She is a stylist and had an interesting collection of large modern paintings and authentic mid-century furniture,. The interior gut renovation was designed to compliment the mid-century modern aesthetic. We stayed within the building footprint to honor a minimal budget and small construction time frame.

Exterior & Grounds

An exterior mahogany deck along the entire back wall was added to make easy access to the master bedroom and kitchen, connecting them to a gunite lap pool set in lawn. The exterior shingles were painted grey along with the addition of aluminum-clad wood windows. Selected specimen trees were planted into a low maintenance landscape ensemble.

Interior

A sparse, modern floor and wall grey color palette highlights the prominent art and furniture collection. The existing wood floors were sanded and stained, and subtle directional lighting was added. Very linear, modern wall tiles were selected to create hints of dramatic contrast.

Kitchen & Bath

A white kitchen island was designed, complemented by stainless appliances. A metal-and-stone tile splash was installed on the rear wall behind the range. The dining, living and screen porch areas were connected to the kitchen and now immediately available to the centerpiece of the home. All baths are minimal with slate-stone floors and large-format, white wall tile.

Details

A very minimal modern approach was taken in selecting all lighting, bath hardware, vanities, plumbing and door hardware. I selected Bauhaus architect Walter Gropius’s 1922 beautiful lever design.
